Contemporary Fences

Contemporary style vinyl fences are the most popular and least expensive “spaced picket” we offer here at Maintenance-Free Outdoor Solutions, Inc., (MFOS).  Available in heights of 3’, 4’, 5’, and 6’ and in the colors of white and tan, CertainTeed’s Bufftech brand of contemporary styles include (in order from least expensive to most expensive) the Victorian, Monarch, Baron, Princeton, and Countess.  Each style differentiates from the others by either the size of the picket, the spacing between the pickets, or both.  All styles can be used in both residential and commercial applications.  Heights of 3’ and 4’ come standard with two rails (top and bottom), and a True 4” x 4” (.140 wall thickness) post.  5’ heights add a third (mid) rail and have a 5” x 5” (.135 wall thickness) post, and 6’ heights also add the mid rail and increase the wall thickness of the 5” x 5” post to .170 for additional wind load strength.
Contemporary fences have 2”x 4” rails (actual size 1-3/4” x 3-1/2”) at the very top and bottom of each section, and either 7/8” x 1-1/2” and/or 7/8” x 3” pickets.  All contemporary styles are considered to be “Good Neighbor” fences since the appearance of the fence is the same on both sides.  This is accomplished by each rail being inserted into routed holes at the mid point of each post, and each picket being inserted into routed holes at the mid point of each rail.  The routed holes also provide a cleaner look and a structurally stronger fence than other brands of vinyl fencing where pickets are attached to the outside of the rails with screws, and where rails are attached to the posts with brackets.  These inferior methods to secure pickets to rails and rails to posts can result in fence components detaching from the rest of the fence.

Galvanized steel channel comes standard in the bottom rail in applications where the fence will be going over dirt and/or grass.  Since there are drain holes in both the galvanized steel and bottom rail, water that enters the bottom rail through the picket holes will drain out of the bottom rail and onto the ground below.  Optional aluminum channel is recommended to replace the galvanized steel channel when the bottom rail is spanning over concrete or asphalt such as patios, driveways, and retaining walls.  This will prevent rust spots from appearing on these hard surfaces.   Optional galvanized steel and aluminum reinforcement is available for the top rail, but normally is unnecessary.  Even though a top rail that is not metal reinforced will flex approximately 1-1/2” both ways from its normal position, this characteristic actually helps to deter kids from climbing over the fence when they feel this flexibility.  The rail will always come back to the normal position when short term weight is applied such as kids climbing over or dogs jumping up onto the fence.  Long term weight such as a ladder pushing against the rail for an extended period, however, can cause the rail to lose its straight shape. Therefore, be sure to never leave anything pushing against your fence for an extended period of time.  Now, please click on each contemporary style to learn which style is the right one for you!
